At 10:31 PM last Thursday night, the United States Senate voted to fund the government into mid-December, then packed up and left town until after the November 4 midterm elections (save for a few "pro forma" sessions in the interim, during which no legislation will be considered). Instead of Capitol Hill, you can expect to find most members making phone calls and knocking on doors, asking for money and votes, for the next few weeks. That's bad news for the pile of unfinished business the senators left in their wake. Last week, the House of Representatives voted to approve a carefully negotiated Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) reauthorization bill, and then sent it back to the Senate for a rubber stamp before it went on to the president for his signature. And the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee approved another House bill, the Strengthening Education Through Research Act (SETRA), and passed it to the full Senate for consideration. Perhaps needless to say, neither of those have made it to the last mile for final approval.
He ido acumulando ideas, fragmentos …
