Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever. Similar Audio Books Reviews Marcus S. Good book. Audio quality must have been fixed after some of these other reviews. No skipping in 2020. Book Rating A Voigt Like so many others have said before, the story is great, the narrators/actors are great, but the skipping and jumping in the audio is terrible. Poor quality oversight on this. Audio starts skipping and repeating no less than 15-20 times throughout the book. Enjoy the story, but be cautioned on the quality of the file being used. David W Great book, a masterpiece of literature. This version is filled with audio errors. It sounds as if someone ripped this book from a scratched CD. Quality, 1/5. Ethan K The narrator and production are actually EXCELLENT, but this copy is TERRIBLE. It was clearly recorded from a CD, skips and all, and there are entire minute long sections where it just skips back on itself for a while.

Outstanding sci-fi book narrated by very good voice actors. Was great for in the car driving to work. If you haven't read Dune, or have only seen the movie, I imagine this would be a nice alternative to reading the novel. I've been meaning to read Frank Herbert's Dune for years now because I love sci-fi/fantasy and because I feel it's important to understand how a genre will forever be influenced by one of its signature works. The world of Dune (both the planet and the larger fictional universe) is notable for its rich detail of culture, history and mythology. Herbert probably borrowed from Tolkein when he added the supplementary glossary and appendix, which I flipped to as often as I encountered a strange word or custom. Dune was first published in 1965 and while many of its themes endure to this day, I believe the story says so much more about the decade in which it was written. Environmentalism was gaining momentum as new movement. The hugely popular Lawrence of Arabia film was released just three years prior.

Comment Add a Comment I enjoyed listening to this recording. The world portrayed in this sci-fi story is detailed. There's the Fremen, the Bene Gesserits, customs & traditions; plots within plots; spice addiction, suspenders that carry one's excessive weight for one; ones; and more. Frank Herbert brought all these elements together in a flawless story of politics, religion, climate control and does so in an entertaining way. A wonderful look at a different world so different from our own. I usually like full-cast dramatizations, which this audiobook version purports to be. It is at first, going back and forth between narration and actor characters (unevenly recorded)--through part of disc 3. Then, it unaccountably reverts to straight narration, except for very occasional scenes here and there, out of the blue (of spice, presumably). I do like Simon Vance's British narration (better than Scott Brick's flat American accent on another audio version). Brick does the voice for Duke Leto in this version.
